Becky G says new album blends her advocacy, family story and music career

Becky G says her latest album brings together her music and her advocacy in a way that feels deeply personal. In an interview with CBS Mornings, the singer said the visuals for her new songs helped her art and activism come together.

She pointed to the video for “EPA,” where she is shown breaking a block of ice in response to recent immigration raids. Becky G said the moment was emotional and reflected the experiences of many in her community.

Born Rebecca Marie Gomez and raised in Inglewood, California, Becky G said she began singing at age 9 and grew up in a Mexican household with her parents, grandparents and siblings. She told CBS News that as a teenager, viral cover songs led to a record deal and made her the family’s main provider, something she says she once resented before working through it with her family.

Now 29, Becky G says she feels more settled into who she is and is focused on her new album, “Baraja Bendita,” which she says represents different sides of her personality. She also said her relationship with soccer player Sebastian Lletget is in a new phase after the couple called off their engagement in 2023, adding that they have both done the work to move forward.
