In the video, Grande plays Pepper, an aspiring actress who keeps getting turned away while auditioning at Fame Inc. The character appears to reflect Grande’s own experience in entertainment, with the story focusing on repeated rejection and criticism.
The video ends with a violent, blood-soaked chainsaw sequence in which Pepper attacks the executives who tore down her looks and talent. The scene ties into the song’s lyrics and the album’s heavier tone.
Grande previously told Apple Music that the new music came from a place of “unfiltered rage.” She said she wrote with less filtering than usual and let herself be more direct in the songs.
