Associated Press film writer Jake Coyle calls “The End of Oak Street” a “bonkers blast” in his review of the Warner Bros. movie. He says director David Robert Mitchell turns an ordinary suburban setting into a breakneck, old-school adventure with a darker edge.
The film is set in the 1980s and follows the Platt family, played by Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery. According to the review, the family’s neighborhood is suddenly transported into a prehistoric world, bringing dinosaurs and other strange dangers into their quiet street.
Coyle writes that the movie starts with familiar family tensions, including hints of marital strain and personal secrets, before escalating into sci-fi chaos. He says the combination of an earnest family story and outrageous visual effects helps give the film its energy.
In his review, Coyle says the movie works because it stays sincere about its characters even as the plot becomes increasingly absurd. “The End of Oak Street” opens in theaters Thursday and is rated PG-13 for violent content, bloody images, some strong language and suggestive material.
