San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was hurt in a car crash last week and is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, the team said in a statement shared July 25.
According to the 49ers, Shanahan will be involved in team activities on a limited basis when training camp begins. The organization also thanked first responders for their help and care.
Multiple outlets reported that Shanahan crashed into an SUV near his home in Northern California on July 14 and suffered a concussion, a broken nose, multiple broken ribs and an injured hand. Those reports, citing sources close to the situation, said he also needed 40 stitches in his face.
Palo Alto Lt. Nicholas Martinez said Shanahan was taken to a local hospital and released later that day, and that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the collision. Martinez also said neither driver was cited and that both cooperated with police. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster and other coordinators will handle head coach duties while Shanahan recovers, according to the team.
