Yale study finds hidden electrical network inside the retina

Researchers at Yale School of Medicine say the retina appears to process visual information in a more connected way than previously thought, according to ScienceDaily. The study, published in Neuron, challenges the long-held idea that visual pathways stay mostly separate as signals move through the eye.

The team found that bipolar cells in both mouse and human retinas were linked by hidden electrical synapses, also known as gap junctions. When they stimulated a single bipolar cell, activity spread far beyond that one pathway, suggesting the channels were sharing information instead of operating independently.

According to the researchers, one bipolar cell type called BC6 seemed to act as a driver within this network, helping coordinate signals across multiple visual pathways. They say this structure may allow the retina to preserve specialized processing while also pooling information when signals are weak.

The scientists say that cooperation between channels could be especially helpful for detecting low-contrast scenes or very small objects. Because the retina is part of the central nervous system, they also believe the findings may offer clues about broader brain function and could improve understanding of retinal diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and congenital night blindness.
