Tom Waits has announced a 50th anniversary vinyl reissue of his album Small Change, according to NME. To mark the occasion, he also shared rare archive footage tied to the record.
The fourth studio album from the U.S. singer-songwriter was originally released in 1976 and became a fan favorite. It included songs such as “Tom Traubert’s Blues,” “Step Right Up” and “The Piano Has Been Drinking.”
NME reports that the reissue will arrive on October 2. The article also points readers to a clip of Waits performing “The Piano Has Been Drinking” on Martin Mull’s late-1970s television show Fernwood Tonight.
In comments from the time of the album’s original release, Waits said his writing was shaped by listening to performers while working as a nightclub doorman in Los Angeles and by overhearing conversations in all-night coffee shops. He said he wanted to turn those experiences into something meaningful.
The announcement comes after Waits released the spoken-word track “The Fly” last month, which serves as the B-side to “Boots On The Ground,” his collaboration with Massive Attack. According to NME, that release marked his first new original music since 2011’s Bad As Me.
