StubHub reportedly spent millions lobbying against California ticket resale cap

StubHub has reportedly spent millions of dollars trying to stop a California bill that would limit ticket resale prices, according to NME and state filings reviewed by The Hollywood Reporter.

The filings show the secondary ticketing company reported nearly $6.2 million in lobbying expenses in California from April through June. The spending comes as lawmakers consider the California Fans First Act.

That bill would bar eligible live entertainment tickets from being resold for more than 10 per cent above their original price. It would also limit marketplace fees and require sellers to disclose the original ticket price.

The measure applies only to independent venues with capacities of 3,000 people or fewer. It has already passed the California Assembly and is now under review in the state Senate.

StubHub told The Hollywood Reporter that it offers fans a secure, verified marketplace and flexibility to buy tickets after the original sale, saying it believes “more choice, flexibility and access put fans first.”
