Grammy-nominated Latin music star Romeo Santos has filed a lawsuit against his accounting and business management firm, alleging that its mistakes cost him more than $2 million, according to Rolling Stone.
The complaint, filed in Miami federal court, names Morrison Brown Argiz & Farra LLP, now known as BDO. Santos claims the firm mishandled his complex tax filings across multiple states and left a large amount of cash sitting in his checking account without earning anything.
In the lawsuit, Santos says the firm incorrectly treated him as a full-year non-resident of New York on his 2021 tax return, which led to an audit. He also alleges the filing was flawed because it ignored his part-year residency in New York while still assigning part of his W-2 income to the state without support, according to the complaint obtained by Rolling Stone.
Santos further alleges that the firm bought an unnecessary duplicate workers’ compensation policy, kept him on a costly private health insurance plan even though he qualified for better SAG-AFTRA coverage, and failed to fund his IRA. The suit also says funds were debited from a Santos account without authorization after the firm was terminated.
The lawsuit seeks damages of at least $2.3 million, including taxes, penalties, interest, professional fees, the unauthorized debit, and losses tied to cash, insurance, and retirement account management. Santos is asking for a jury trial.
