The stage adaptation of Prince’s Purple Rain is set to open on Broadway in 2027, according to NME. The musical will play at the Majestic Theatre beginning March 12, with opening night scheduled for April 12.
The show is based on the 1984 film and includes Prince songs such as “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “Take Me with You” and “Purple Rain.” The production had its world premiere at the State Theater in Minneapolis last year.
For its Broadway run, the creative team has changed. Saheem Ali will direct, with a book by Peter Duchan, while Ebony Williams is returning as choreographer. Casting for the Broadway production has not yet been announced.
According to NME, Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, both longtime collaborators of Prince, are serving as music advisers. The musical follows the story of the film, which starred Prince as “The Kid,” and Prince won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the movie.
