Missy Elliott celebrated the 30th anniversary of Aaliyah’s One In a Million on Thursday, praising the late singer and the 1996 album in a post on X, according to Billboard.
In her message, Elliott said Aaliyah brought in a “futuristic and distinctive” sound, noting her smooth vocals and choreography. She described One In a Million as more than an album, calling it art and a masterpiece that still feels fresh decades later.
One In a Million was Aaliyah’s second studio album and was released in August 1996. It reached No. 2 on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and included hit singles such as “If Your Girl Only Knew” and “The One I Gave My Heart To.”
After a 2021 reissue, the album reached the top 10 on the Billboard 200 for the first time, peaking at No. 10. Billboard also noted that Missy Elliott and Timbaland helped shape much of the project, and have continued to honor Aaliyah’s legacy since her death in a 2001 plane crash.
