Maricopa marks National Newspaper Week with mayoral proclamation

Maricopa is spending Oct. 4-10 recognizing the people who report on the stories, milestones and everyday events that shape the community. Mayor Nancy Smith has proclaimed the week National Newspaper Week.

According to InMaricopa, the proclamation highlights the value of local news in helping residents stay informed about public safety, education, businesses, community events and other issues that affect daily life.

The proclamation also points to another part of local journalism that can go unnoticed: recording a community’s history. It says local media document a community’s challenges, achievements, milestones and the people who live there.

Smith also recognized the many people who help produce local news, including reporters, publishers, photographers, editors and delivery personnel. National Newspaper Week has been observed in the United States and Canada since 1940, according to the proclamation.
