Maricopa father shares parenting lessons in book about son Jacob Cowing

Maricopa football standout Jacob Cowing’s journey to the NFL is now the subject of a new book by his father, Monte Cowing. Titled “My Boy From Mars,” the book was highlighted during a signing at Fry’s Marketplace on Oct. 24, according to InMaricopa.

Monte Cowing said the book is as much about parenting as it is about sports. He and Jacob’s grandmother, Pamela Cowing, greeted readers and displayed copies near the store entrance during the event.

At the heart of the book is Monte’s message that parents should recognize and nurture a child’s natural interests instead of forcing a path. He said Jacob showed an early talent for football and other sports, and that the family tried to support that passion as it grew.

Jacob finished his Maricopa High School career with 89 catches for 2,065 yards and 21 touchdowns, according to the story. Monte said the recruiting process became challenging when the family learned Jacob was missing credits needed for college admission, leading to a difficult push to finish a semester’s worth of work in two weeks.

Jacob eventually played at the University of Arizona for two seasons before the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Monte said the book reflects what he learned along the way: if a child truly loves something, parents should help cultivate it rather than push too hard.
