Marcus Mumford is remembering an unforgettable first meeting with Kendrick Lamar that took place backstage after Lamar’s set at Bonnaroo Music Festival.
During an appearance on the SmartLess podcast on Monday, the Mumford & Sons singer said he was specifically asked to come backstage because Lamar wanted to see him, according to Billboard. Mumford said the invitation felt direct and deliberate.
What surprised him most was that Lamar was in the middle of changing clothes when he walked into the dressing room. Mumford said the rapper was down to his underwear by the time they started talking, which he described as a confident move.
Mumford praised Lamar’s self-assurance, calling it “real confidence” and “swag.” Lamar has performed at Bonnaroo three times, including 2015, when Mumford & Sons shared the lineup.
