Jim James has released a new single and music video for the title track from Wowed Out, his first solo album in eight years, according to Rolling Stone.
The album is set to arrive Aug. 28 and marks James’ fifth solo release. He produced the project himself, and it was shaped by recordings he and longtime friend and composer Brian Reitzell made for two film-scoring projects in the early 2010s.
James said in a statement that he had spent years coming back to those songs without knowing what to do with them, but that things started moving in a new direction last year. The title Wowed Out, he said, reflects the sensory overload of modern life.
James also said he was inspired by Alice Coltrane’s spiritual recordings while making the album, aiming for songs that take listeners on a journey without always building to a big payoff. His first single from the record, “Come Again,” was released last month.
Wowed Out follows his 2018 solo albums Uniform Distortion and Uniform Clarity. James will mark the album’s release with a solo acoustic performance at Song Summit in Park City, Utah, on Aug. 28, followed by a solo headline tour beginning Nov. 28 in Louisville, Kentucky.
