Jannik Sinner will not play in this year’s US Open after deciding he needs more time to recover from a right knee injury, according to E! News. The announcement came a little more than a week before the tournament begins in Queens, New York, on Aug. 30.
In an Aug. 21 Instagram post, the top-ranked tennis player said he and his team had worked hard to get him ready, but they ultimately concluded he could not compete. He said he had recently returned to the court in Monte Carlo and realized his knee still was not ready.
Sinner said he was “very sad and disappointed” to miss the event, adding that New York has a special place in his heart. This will be the first time in his career that he has not entered the US Open.
According to E! News, Sinner has played the tournament seven times in a row since 2019. He won his first US Open title in 2024 and finished second in men’s singles last year, losing to Carlos Alcaraz. The story also notes that Sinner had previously withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open because of the same knee issue.
