A waste collection company in Italy helped recover a lottery ticket worth about $1.15 million after a Bitonto resident mistakenly threw it away, according to UPI Odd News.
Roberto Nicola Toscano, director of Sanb, said the resident bought a MillionDay ticket for the July 31 drawing using the numbers 2, 4, 8, 10 and 51. After scanning the ticket at a store and seeing a message that it was “non-payable,” the person assumed it was no longer valid and tossed it.
Toscano said the family later learned the numbers had actually matched the drawing, and the message meant the prize was too large to be paid out at the store. By then, however, the trash had already been collected.
Sanb then tracked down the truck that had picked up the store’s waste. Toscano said employees eventually found the ticket intact inside a torn bag mixed in with other tickets, many of them damaged. He added that after touching the ticket for luck, he and his workers bought a scratch-off ticket and won $57.62.
