Many people who deal with oily hair assume more frequent washing is the answer, but a scalp expert says that approach can sometimes backfire, according to E! News.
Nelida D’Alessandro, lead scalp health expert and board-certified trichologist at Nutrire, said washing too often, especially with harsh products, can remove the scalp’s natural oils. She explained that the scalp may then compensate by producing more oil, creating a frustrating cycle.
D’Alessandro also said overwashing can cause dryness, irritation and damage to the scalp barrier over time. She noted there is no one-size-fits-all rule for hair washing, but said many people do well washing their hair two to three times a week.
How often someone should wash depends on factors such as scalp type, hair texture, lifestyle and product use. According to D’Alessandro, oilier scalps may need more frequent cleansing, while drier scalps may benefit from less frequent washing. Finer hair can show oil faster, while coarser or curlier textures may go longer between washes.
