Dr. Dre says he is using artificial intelligence in music production and views it as a “new tool for creativity,” according to NME.
In a new interview with the New York Times, Dre compared resistance to AI with the pushback that drum machines and synthesizers faced when they first appeared. He said some people are simply afraid of learning new things and added, “I’m embracing it.”
Dre explained that he has been using AI “as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did.” He also argued that the only people who see AI as a threat are those who struggle to create.
His longtime business partner Jimmy Iovine was also positive about the technology, telling the New York Times that he is “very pro-AI in music creation.” Dre and Iovine have worked together since the 1990s and co-founded Beats Electronics, which Apple bought for $3 billion in 2014.
The comments come amid continued debate over AI in music, with some artists criticizing it and others experimenting with it. Dre’s recent work includes producing Snoop Dogg’s 2024 album Missionary.
