Dave Marsh, the influential music critic and author best known for his books on Bruce Springsteen, has died at age 76, according to ABC News.
Marsh died Friday in Connecticut, his friend Jeffrey St. Clair told The Associated Press. St. Clair said Marsh had been living with a degenerative brain disease for several years. SiriusXM host Jim Rotolo also announced the news on social media.
Springsteen called Marsh a “great friend” and said the band was “heartbroken” by the loss. Steven Van Zandt also remembered Marsh on Instagram, describing him as fearless and a tremendous writer.
Marsh became an early champion of Springsteen through his writing for Creem magazine and later with his first Rolling Stone cover story in 1978. His 1979 biography, “Born to Run: The Bruce Springsteen Story,” became a bestseller, and he followed it with “Glory Days: Bruce Springsteen in the 1980s” in 1986.
Born in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1950, Marsh left Wayne State University in 1969 to write for Creem. He also wrote several other books on music, worked with The Kristen Ann Carr Fund, and was a frequent presence on SiriusXM’s E Street Nation channel in recent years.
