A semaphore puzzle that had been looping atop Adobe’s headquarters in downtown San Jose, California, has finally been solved after three years, according to UPI Odd News.
The installation, known as the San Jose Semaphore and created by artist Ben Rubin, has been running since May 2023. It shows four circles moving in different positions as part of the animated display.
Software engineer Brian Vincent worked out the pattern this spring. He determined that the code represented colors in the pixels of a digital image, specifically a single rose from Sandro Botticelli’s painting Birth of Venus.
Vincent said in a video released by Adobe that the puzzle struck the right balance of challenge and effort. Adobe added that another semaphore puzzle will be installed soon, and the first person to solve it will win a free two-year subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud.
