Brian Eno, Gary Lineker and Richard Curtis are among 120 UK millionaires who have signed an open letter asking Prime Minister Andy Burnham to raise taxes on the very wealthy, according to NME.
The letter was organized by Patriotic Millionaires and argues that higher taxes should target people whose income comes from wealth rather than wages. The signatories said they are prepared to pay more and want investment that would help build a more equal Britain.
Other names on the list include journalist Sasha Bates, former Greggs chairman Ian Gregg, economist Gary Stevenson, Signet Jewellers chief executive Mike Barnes, TV director Robert Beal, former footballer Georgios Samaras, and authors Val McDermid and Michael Berners-Lee.
Lineker said he was proud to stand with people who want a more equal society, adding that ordinary people are already paying too much and that the UK’s richest can contribute more. The group is backing a two per cent tax on wealth above £10 million, while Burnham has not ruled out a wealth tax and has said he may need to ask for a little more tax at some point.
