Bill Callahan will narrate the audiobook version of Matthew Schnipper’s upcoming memoir Rise Above, according to Pitchfork. Callahan’s deep, weathered voice will bring the book to life as it heads into audio format.
The memoir focuses on Schnipper’s experience of grief after the death of his son Renzo, who was nearly two years old when he died in 2021. Pitchfork notes that Schnipper is a former executive editor at the publication.
In a preview clip, Callahan reads a passage about Schnipper introducing his three-month-old son to the death metal band Morbid Angel. The excerpt describes Schnipper’s effort to give Renzo a broad musical education from an early age.
According to the excerpt, the Morbid Angel moment happened in May 2020 and was captured on video, allowing Schnipper to revisit it after many of his memories of his son’s short life were lost. The memoir says Renzo died on Christmas Eve 2021, two days after suffering an aneurysm.
