Maricopa police arrested Leonard Burton, 43, and Michael Brown, 37, on suspicion of shoplifting after an incident at Walmart on July 19, according to a probable cause statement cited by InMaricopa.
Authorities said the two were seen trying to leave the store with two shopping carts filled with nearly $1,000 in unpaid merchandise around 3:45 p.m. Security provided a vehicle description, and police later found the pair’s vehicle at the Alto Apartments on Porter and Iron Point roads.
Officers confirmed Burton and Brown were the occupants of the vehicle. Brown was arrested at the apartments, while Burton turned himself in several hours later after police contacted him by phone.
According to InMaricopa, Burton told police he had tried to buy 14 items worth $686 through the Walmart app but said he did not know how to use it. Police said the carts contained a total of 51 items worth nearly $1,000. Both men face misdemeanor shoplifting charges.
