William Shatner and his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, are reflecting on the period when they were both battling cancer at the same time, according to CBS News.
Shatner said he first noticed a lump that a doctor thought was a clogged salivary gland, but after it continued to grow he had it checked again. He said an oncologist confirmed it needed to be removed, and later learned the cancer had spread to his brain and possibly his lung.
Shatner Gretsch said she found a lump in her breast nearly a year before her father’s diagnosis. Although an initial ultrasound did not show anything alarming, she said she trusted something was wrong and pushed for further checks. She said that decision was critical, because the cancer was aggressive and had already spread beyond the breast wall into her chest.
She underwent chemotherapy, radiation, a double mastectomy and a year of immunotherapy, leaning on her father for support during treatment. Both Shatner and Shatner Gretsch are now cancer-free and discussing their experiences on a new podcast, No Time But Now, which premieres Wednesday and will focus on medicine, science and spirituality.
Shatner also told CBS News that he initially kept his diagnosis private because he worried it could affect his work.
