Suge Knight has claimed in a new interview with TMZ from prison that some of Tupac Shakur’s ashes were smoked by the rapper’s friends and relatives after his death, according to NME.
Knight, who was driving the car in which Shakur was fatally shot in September 1996, said Shakur’s mother, Afeni, asked for her son to be cremated quickly. He alleged that he first offered a funeral home worker $200,000 to carry out the cremation that night, later raising the amount to $1.2 million.
He also said Afeni later invited a group of Shakur’s friends and relatives to a Las Vegas hotel room, where some of the ashes were allegedly rolled into blunts and smoked. Knight said he did not join in because he was on probation and believed it could violate those terms.
Knight gave a similar account to People last year. Members of Shakur’s group Outlawz also made similar claims in 2011, saying they mixed some of his ashes with cannabis during a memorial on a beach. A spokesperson for Afeni denied that she or any other family members took part.
The comments came as the trial over Shakur’s murder opened this week. Duane “Keffe D” Davis has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder with use of a deadly weapon, and prosecutors allege he helped organize the drive-by attack without firing the fatal shots himself.
