HBO Max’s Lanterns is bringing the Green Lantern Corps to television while also linking into the larger DC Universe, according to E! News. The series follows veteran Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, as he trains rookie John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, during an investigation into an extraterrestrial incident in rural Nebraska.
The show premiered Aug. 16 and is releasing new episodes weekly through Oct. 4. It is part of DC Comics’ Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, alongside films including Superman, Supergirl and Clayface.
DC co-CEO James Gunn told Rolling Stone last October that those projects were built into the plan from the start. He said they are part of the broader world being created, while still standing on their own.
Lanterns also includes timeline jumps that touch on earlier and later events in the DCU. According to the article, Nathan Fillion reprises his role as Guy Gardner, and the series is meant to help set up future storylines in the franchise.
