Shark Week may be winding down, but UPI Odd News highlighted five recent shark stories that kept the annual TV event in the spotlight, according to UPI Odd News.
One story featured paddleboarders off the Santa Barbara, California coast who were unknowingly followed by a great white shark after heading out in search of it. Drone video taken by Kayla Ross' uncle showed the shark tracking their board in the water.
Another story centered on Maine shark biologist Emily Morrison, who Guinness World Records says holds the record for the most sharks tattooed on the body by a woman. Morrison, known as “Shark Lady Emily,” has 106 shark tattoos and later appeared on a Discovery Channel Shark Week special.
UPI Odd News also recapped a bright orange nurse shark caught near Costa Rica’s Tortuguero National Park in August 2024. Researchers said the unusual color was caused by xanthism, and they said it was the first time total xanthism had been documented in a shark.
The roundup also included a great white that bit a camera near Malibu, California, and another great white that may have been the first caught on camera in Rhode Island waters while feeding on a whale carcass, according to the Atlantic Shark Institute.
