Divinity Roxx went from self-taught bass player to Beyoncé’s stage

Divinity Roxx taught herself how to play bass guitar and eventually went on to perform with Beyoncé at the BET Awards in front of millions of viewers, according to Billboard.

Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, Roxx was drawn to music early. She wrote rap lyrics, started on clarinet in third grade, and later turned to bass after feeling frustrated that she was only being allowed to rap on recordings in college.

Roxx said learning bass helped her be taken more seriously as a musician. She later worked with bassist Victor Wooten, attended his bass camp and was eventually invited to tour with him after introducing herself by rapping and playing bass.

She also toured with an all-female band and said the experience showed audiences that women belong at the center of music. Today, Roxx makes children’s music focused on rhythm, confidence and positivity, and has received two Grammy nominations for best children’s music album.
