Seven people died when a helicopter crashed in a remote area of northern Kenya on Aug. 19, according to local police and the U.S. State Department, as reported by E! News through NBC News. The victims included six tourists and a Kenyan pilot.
Officials said five of those killed were Americans, including businessman Roger Duarte, 42, and Telemundo executive José Alberto Suárez, 55. The helicopter had been traveling from Loisaba Conservancy to the Ewaso Nyiro area in Samburu County before crashing in the foothills of Mount Ololokwe, according to local media cited by NBC News.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. The Kenya Red Cross said emergency teams were helping with the response, but recovery efforts were complicated by rough terrain and a fire at the crash site.
Duarte’s father confirmed his son’s death to Daily Mail and said he was devastated. Suárez had served as president and general manager of Telemundo 31, Telemundo 49 and Telemundo Ft. Myers–Naples, and NBCU and Telemundo leaders said they were heartbroken by his death.
